Full Description

A two-phase Roman masonry building discovered during excavations at 5 Balkerne Gardens in 1965 (ECC659). The building was constructed on the site of an earlier timber structure which had been destroyed by fire (MCC2396), and was built after clearing operations were undertaken. Remains consisted of the foundations cut into the destruction layer. Several piers and walls were excavated including two similar piers built of yellow mortar and septaria. However, it was not possible to deduce from the incomplete evidence available, what sort of building it was. Due to the absence of associated levels, the date and duration of the building phases could not be assessed.<1>
