Full Description

A Roman oven or furnace was discovered during excavations at 5 Balkerne Gardens (now Parsley House) in 1965 (ECC659). The oven consisted of a small, rectangular tiled hearth surrounded by stake holes which were probably the remains of a domed wattle and daub superstructure. The clay floor of the surrounding area had been baked hard and in one trench numerous pieces of slag were found on the floor suggesting that the oven may in fact have been a small smith’s furnace. The oven was one of three (see also MCC2393 and MCC2394).<1>
