Description
In 1996 the site west of Beverley Road (east of Silvanus Close) where the tombstone of Longinus (MCC1361) had been found became available for redevelopment, and Philip Crummy, invited Colchester Archaeological Group, principally James Fawn, to reinvestigate the area, principally to see whether any of the missing elements of the tombstone could be found. Fawn died before he was able to write a report on the investigations, and archive notes were compiled by members of CAG. As well as missing parts of the tombstone (from a pit SP F2), discoveries included two inhumation burials (SP F6 & SP6a), both cutting through a Roman road surface. No grave goods or other dating evidence was found associated with either burial. The road (MCC1928)was bounded to the north by two relatively straight ditches SP Features 7 & 7a. To the south the delineation was less obvious. There were no clear ditches, but rather a more or less continuous line of irregular quarry pits (a rare amphora brooch was recovered from SP F4a). The total width of the road between the ditches to the north, and the quarry pits to the south, can be estimated at c.21m, and the section uncovered is in general alignment with sections found at Colchester Grammar School to the east, and at West Lodge Road to the west. There were also Roman refuse pits SP F1, F4 & F7c, midden, two pottery assemblages interpreted as redeposited cremation burials SP F5 & F9 (one on the north and one on the south side of the road) and, on the north side of the road, a haphazard assemblage of reused building materials SP F10 & 11 – brick, tegula and dressed stone – used to create a flattish raised structure, which it is conjectured to form the base or plinth for some sort of monument, now lost. Finds recovered from the house of James Fawn totalled, after sorting, 26 archive boxes. The overwhelming majority of finds were pottery fragments, but there were also human and bone fragments, building materials, and a few small finds, mainly coins. The position of the finds is possible in a very few cases, however, either because of additional labelling or because the numbers are actually recorded on plans.<1>
