Full Description

In 1996, the site west of Beverley Road (east of Silvanus Close) where the tombstone of Longinus (MCC1361) had been found became available for redevelopment, and Philip Crummy, invited Colchester Archaeological Group, principally James Fawn, to reinvestigate the area.<1>

Two intercutting inhumation burials (SP F6 & SP6a) were defined, cutting the Roman road MCC10057. The first, lying approximately N to S in F6, had been truncated at the pelvis by F6a, so that only the legs remained. F6a was approximately 2m long x 60cm wide, and contained a complete skeleton, lying approximately NW to SE. It appeared to have been thrown face down into the grave, with its arms folded up under its chest, and its left foot resting part way up the west face of the grave. Both skeletons were in very poor condition. No grave goods or other dating evidence was found associated with either burial. No nails were found which might have indicated that they had been in coffins. The position of the arms in the complete skeleton from F6a, the report suggests, is a possible indication that the body had been wrapped in a shroud.
