Full Description
In 1996, the site west of Beverley Road (east of Silvanus Close) where the tombstone of Longinus (MCC1361) had been found became available for redevelopment, and Philip Crummy, invited Colchester Archaeological Group, principally James Fawn, to reinvestigate the area.<1>
The report identifies three Roman refuse pits SP F1, F4 & F7c. The drawing shows two of them, both c.1.0-1.25m diameter x 0.40-0.70m deep. The pits were filled with dark organic material having no discernable stratification, and containing typical assemblages of Roman pot sherds and bone, not different to the general assemblage of finds from across the site as a whole.
The featured described as a midden was similar to, but somewhat larger than any of the rubbish pits, and was somewhat more markedly stratified, with layers of yellowish green (and smelly) organic matter in a sandy matrix, alternating with layers of darker organic material. The only item of note found within the midden was a Trajan coin, either BV712 or BV773.
