Description
A four-week excavation was carried out on the site of the Lion Walk United Reformed Church in the winter of 1984-5. On examination, the areas to the north and south of the church proved to have been almost completely destroyed by the construction of 18th and 19th century burial vaults leaving little more than the area directly under the church intact. Remains recovered during the excavation including evidence for the defences of the legionary fortress, Roman buildings, drain and street, and also post medieval structures.<1>
