Full Description
During excavations at the site of the Lion Walk United Reformed Church in 1984 (ECC378) a north-south footway was discovered along the eastern side of Insula 36, situated between a building (MCC1335) and a north-south drain (MCC1334) next to a street (MCC738). The footway could only be examined superficially but 4th-century pottery was found in association with the latest surfaces.
On the upper edge of the west side of the drain were three septaria-and-mortar pad-foundations which may have formed the base of an arcade of piers or columns. It is possible that the part of the footway immediately adjacent to the building (MCC1335) was under an arcaded veranda which turned westwards to pass along the southern side of the building to incorporate the small buttress.<1>
