Full Description

During excavations (in advance of the construction of a basement) at the Lion Walk United Reformed Church site in 1984 (ECC378), a Roman building (CAT Building 170) was discovered on the east side of Insula 36. The building was aligned north-south and consisted of only two rooms, measuring 5.3 x 4.9m in area. One (the northern room) was roughly square in shape whilst the other was narrow and passage-like. The foundations of the walls had been completely robbed-out in the 11th or 12th century. A small external buttress built of septaria set in mortar was located on the south side of the building. No floor surfaces or make-up appeared to have survived, although it was not completely excavated. To the east of the building, there was a footway (MCC1336) on to which the building had presumably fronted. To the south, there was CAT Building 19. The purpose of the building is unclear, perhaps a small house or possibly a shop, store or workshop.<1>
