Evaluation trenches dug at the National Bus Station revealed archaeological material ranging from Roman through Post Medieval into the modern period.

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken in 2010 on groundworks for a temporary footbridge located adjacent to the extant road bridge over the River Colne, which was undergoing repair. No archaeological finds or features were identified as the excavation did not extend down to the archaeological horizon.

Apparently the church is on the site of a substantial Roman town house..

In his copy of Morant, William Wire marked on the map, in red, a large part in the SE corner of Insula 40, is a tessellated pavement, but there seems to be no explanatory text.

"A tessellated pavement was uncovered by Mr Mason behind No 44 North Hill in October 1923.

Entry in Wire's diary, 1856: "a pavement made with red tesserae was discovered in laying a drain down Mr Hitchcock's back way, Culver Street.

Entry in Wire's Diary, 1844; "Mr Joseph Dennis, Clerk of the Lion Walk Chapel, informs me that when he was digging a grave for the son of Mr JB Harvey (c.30ft E of Lion Walk) in the chapel ground, he came upon a tessellated pavement.

Mosaics and other Roman remains, indicative of a high status Roman villa-type building, have been frequently observed since they were first noted by Cromwell Mortimer in 1730.
