Full Description

"A tessellated pavement was uncovered by Mr Mason behind No 44 North Hill in October 1923. It lay 5ft from the south wall of the property and 37ft from the back door of the house at a depth of 2ft 6"." (This address would place it within insula 1). Also found was ainted plaster. "This says Laver is the same pavement which was discovered in March 1849 at the back of Mr Stirling Macleans house, then apparently No 47". A note in source 1 adds "but Wheeler and Laver are clear that (7) (ie, 12432) is in the garden of No 45 and this is in that of 44. We regard the identity of (6) and (7) as doubtful and show them separately". (6) and (7) are sites 12457 and 12432 respectively. <1> <2> <3> The NGR givem above is that for the rear of No 47. "In April 1936 Mr EJ Rudsdale noted a red tessellated pavement only 15" below the surface of this same garden" (ie 44 North Hill). <1>
