Full Description
Entry in Wire's diary, 1856: "a pavement made with red tesserae was discovered in laying a drain down Mr Hitchcock's back way, Culver Street. As the trench for the drain was narrow there was no means of ascertaining the size of it". Sketch plan showing the position as about opposite Bank Passage. This is probably the red border of that found 6 Sept 1886 partly under Culver Street and partly under adjacent buildings, at the gateway to Mumford's Iron Foundry, 60 yards E of Head Street. A large piece was raised and taken to the museum. The depth was about 5ft, red border on the N side was at least 5ft wide. The pattern, chiefly black and white strongly resembles that from North Station Road. The concrete under the pavement was unusually thin. Parts of the walls iof septaria were found in the middle of the street. <1> Other refs. <2> <3> <4> Mosaic and foundations found 1886. Close by , down the former "Hitchcock's Backway" opposite Bank Passage a tessellated pavement and roof tiles were found in 1856. <5> <6>
