Full Description

Apparently the church is on the site of a substantial Roman town house. Fragm,ents of mosaic pavement were found during C18 grave digging. <1> <2> <3> Tessellated pavements have been found, at considerable distances apart, during grave digging in the C18 and in 1871 (only authority for the latter is the OS map 1:500). <4> <5> <6> Foundations and Roman pavement found under the E end of St MArys church in 1871. <4> Other ref. <7>
Bones and teeth and Roman pottery found. <8>

Site Assessment = No current threats to the graveyard or church. Should any arise excavation would be necessary. <3>
