Full Description

"A sketch-plan in the Museum, dated 7.3.1914, shows some large trenches cut by Mr EN Mason. It is on a very large scale and the site must have been behind the brewery. It shows a saw-pit by the side of a shed, but the saw-pit of 1844 had disappeared before 1876. The shed cannot be identified. His manuscript note identifies his saw-pit with that of Wire. Five of his trenches proved negative though carried 6-8ft deep. There is no record whether the subsoil was then reached or not. A trench at the west end of the shed revealed portions of walls of at least two periods, with no floors. There being no scale and no north point, we cannot enter this on the map". <1> <2>
