Full Description

Mosaic pavement, red and white with `star-like' pattern found, before 1768, in "Berry Field", now the grounds of East Hill House, probably within the NE corner of the meadow 130ft W of the E wall, as marked on the OS 1:500. <1> - <4> Division between Insulae 32 and 40 uncertain; Hull places the pavement in 32 but it could be in 40. It was of red tesserae intermixed with many white ones disposed in a star-like form, and was found by George Wegg (owner of East Hill House) in time to be reported to Morant. "JH Round's suggestion (see source 6) that this is the same as a pavement discovered in 1907 (see 12281) is rejected by Wheeler and Laver. The identification of its site with the mark on the 1:500 map of 1876 (`Tessellated Pavement Found') is presumably due to PG Laver. We regard it as uncertain". <5> <6> Part of the pavement found in 1907 was built into the wall separating the Minories from East Hill House but does not show a star-like form nor a large intermixture of white tesserae. <7> <6>

A magnetomer and topographic survey was carried out in the grounds of East Hill House. A negative linear anomoly running N-S is possibly a street, revetment, or terrace.<8>
