Full Description

Mill site in use prior to C18. By C19 mill had been converted to "the largest gin distillery in England", but by the mid C19 it was back in use as a corn mill before being converted to a laundry c.1900. The mill building was rebuilt in brick in the mid C20. The site is subject to re-development proposals which will result in the demolition of the laundry and destruction of any surviving elements of the earlier mill building(s) and maltings to the SE. The mill house immediately to the E (MCC3253) is a Listed Building and will be retained.<1>

Historic building survey carried out in 2002 on the laundry, consisting of the sorting rooms, washroom, drying/pressing room, boiler shed and reception area.<2>

Archaeological monioring during the demolition and clearance stages of a mid 19th-century malting and early 20th-century laundry, ahead of a housing development, discovered a culvert associated with an early 19th-century distillery and a wheel pit to a mid 19th-century corn mill.<3>
