Full Description

House shown on 1897 2nd edition OS map. Associated with distillery/mill to NW, maltings to S (MCC5002) and former The Glenn (Hull House) to NE (MCC5004). This building will be retained in proposed redevlopment of this area, but adjacent buildings are to be demolished.<1>
Folowing a desk based assessment of the site, a historic building survey was undertaken by ECC FAU in 2002 on a mid 19th century malting and a 20th century laundry prior to demolition as part of a large re-development scheme. The laundry was located on a site of a previous 19th century water powered corn mill and possibly a medieval oil mill although the latter may have formed part of the still standing Grade II listed c16th centur Hull House. An important early 19th century distillery stood to the south, reputedly one of the largest in the country at the time and fully mechanised at this early date. The survey recorded pre industrial malting techniques and 20th-century industrial elements and process flow.

Archaeological monitoring during the demolition and clearance stages of the malting and laundry was limited, and the main areas beneath the laundry buildings were not observed. However a culvert associated with the early 19th century distillery and the wheel pit to the corn mill were discovered during the works.<1><2>
