Description

Excavation intended to test the course of a known Roman road. The investigations were carried out by a team of boys from the school under the direction of P.W. Crittenden and revealed pits and a 'burnt floor'. No evidence of road metalling was encountered.<1> Four trenches, each 10' x 36' and separated by 2' baulks were taken out along a N-S line, with a later extension 10' further south. The main features included a burnt red earth floor which was found in all trenches, a drainage ditch, a brick platform erected above the floor with two post-holes. Evidence for small-scale metalworking took the form of slag and ironstone. Several Roman coins were found above the burnt layer. Two pits were also located one of which contained a mass of oyster shells. The second pit contained tile fragments, brick and wall-plaster. The datable contents of both pits suggested a late 1st to early 2nd century date. There was no sign of a Roman road.<2>
