Full Description

During excavations at the Royal Grammar School in 1964 (ECC692), a number of Roman features were discovered in addition to a ditch (MCC1787) and coins (MCC1791). The features included a burnt floor which was found in all trenches at a constant depth and included charcoal, animal bones and clay in its make-up. The floor was dated to the second half of the 1st century. A channel was cut through and under the burnt clay layer and seemed to drain into the flat-bottomed ditch (MCC1787). In addition, two post-holes and two pits were recorded. The pits both appeared to have been dug at the same time and dating evidence suggested that they had been in use during the late 1st to early 2nd century.<1><2>
