Description

Excavations by Brian Blake and Colchester Archaeological Group on the site of a Romano-Celtic temple situated on the flood plain of the River Colne close to the temple in the St Helena School grounds. Excavations were carried out over a period of five weeks during the Easter holiday period. Preliminary survey work was carried out by staff and students of the North East Essex Technical College and School of Art. 10 foot square trenches were excavated across a mound which proved to be waterlogged. A solid temple structure was found to overlie an earlier timber building which had been destroyed by fire.<1>
