Full Description

A Romano-Celtic temple situated on the south bank of the River Colne near Sheepen.
The cella was excavated in 1959 <1>. This is Philip Crummy's Temple 5. Compared to Temple 4 (MCC1775 and MCC1777) with which it shared a temenos (MCC1781), the building was stratigraphically later and a coin in the make-up of its floors indicates that it was built after AD 183. The cella wall was timber-framed, strengthened externally at two corners by angle-irons. An absence of 4th century coins on the site 'tends to point to the destruction of the temple c.300'.<2>
