Description

Between 1995 and 1999, a series of excavations were carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust at Gosbecks Archaeological Park. Utilising aerial photographs of the park, the location of the temple was outlined on the ground as painted white lines in early 1995. Since the opening of the park later that year, a series of geophysical surveys have been carried out targeting specific areas of interest. The techniques employed have included magnetometry (gradiometer), resistivity and ground radar. The excavation methods for the 1995-97 and 99 seasons were consistent. All topsoil was removed in meter or half meter squares. Topsoil and fill of all features was sieved to recover cultural material. For the evaluation of 1998, the topsoil and subsoil of Trenches 8 and Trenches 14-17 were excavated by hand. In the other trenches this was removed by machine until features could be recognised. All hand excavated material was sieved. Spoil from all years was metal detected. <1>
