Backfill of Trench A was removed to allow for the completion of the excavation of the ditch. Subsequent to localised magnetometer survey, trenches E and F were also positioned over the NW and SW inner, middle and portico corners. The outer trench F coincided with a park field boundary ditch. Full excavation of the ditch showed it to be approximately 10m wide and 3.8m deep, with a v-shaped profile. Excavation of the three trenches comprising E in the NW corner resulted in a deep inner and shallow middle portico robbed cuts. However no position for the outer portico was established, possibly due to previous excavation work. The three trenches comprising F, in the SW corner yielded in situ foundation at the inner corner, and robbed middle and outer corners. Of further interest in the SW area was the presence of additional archaeological stratigraphy. Combining the plans from the 1996 and 97 season, provisional dimensions of the inner and middle portico were calculated. Further work is required for a more accurate plan. <1>
