Description

Two trenches were excavated during this season. Based on the white line plan of the temple and portico, a single trench A was positioned through the temple and extended southwards, partially into the ditch. Magnetometry had highlighted significant anomaly to the east of the temple. Thus a second trench B was positioned over this feature. Excavation revealed that Trench A was directly over the temple west side wall alignment. This was fully excavated. The returns of the north wall and south wall of the temple were visible near the east section of the trench. Both the north and south ambulatory alignments were located. All the features had been robbed for building material. The south end of the trench extended into the ditch which was excavated to a depth of approximately 1 meter and backfilled at the end of the season. To the east of the temple, Trench B revealed a fairly deep feature with very few related finds to facilitate dating. The only evidence of any former structure came from slots for large timbers at the bottom of the trench, possible joints for a timber floor. A small trench was dug near the north east corner of the temple, for erection of a sign board. A narrow linear feature was recorded, though not excavated. <1>
