Description
A small investigation, comprising 11 trenches (all dug by hand, and all sieved), was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in 1999 to investigate the temple enclosure complex and the ditch associated with the theatre. These were located using singly or combined, geophysical magnetometry and resistivity.
Initially, four trenches (T2, T3, T4 and T9) were located by geophysics to ascertain the wall lines of the enclosure, but these yielded negative results. No archaeological features were recorded. The underlying surface geology seemed to be giving spurious results to both magnetometry and resistivity.
Utilising a plan of the temple enclosure from the 1948 excavation by M. R. Hull, a new trench T10 was excavated to locate the N-S alignment of the inner temple enclosure. Excavation provided a successful result, a robbed out wall line and underlying stratigraphy. Two other trenches T1 and T11 were positioned as a ‘best fit’ (based on Hull's plan) for the E-W wall alignment. These too yielded no sign of a wall line. Consequently, it was decided to follow the inner enclosure robber trench found in T10 northward to find its junction with the E-W alignment. Despite former excavations in this locality by Hull, and before him, Jenkins in 1842, the ‘likely’ position for the junction was found.
Both cropmark and geophysical plots gave excellent correlation for the theatre ditch location. Two trenches T7 and T8 across the E-W and N-S alignments of the theatre ditch were excavated. The v-shaped ditch in T7 contrasted with a shallower and more ragged edged one found in T8. The N-W/S-E limb of this splits into two separate ditches. A third trench T6 positioned across these ditches was started, but only the topsoil removed over the southern ditch. <1>
