Description

The discovery, while digging a hole for a linen-post about five feet from the east end of the garden path, of an amphora led to an excavation at 13 Rawstorn Road. Two trenches were dug, one roughly east and west about eight feet long and a second at right angles to the first about six feet long. The Roman level was marked by quantities of oyster shells and was reached at a depth of 30" to 3ft. The maximum depth was about five feet. Finds included: A number of Iron nails and other corroded iron objects, a bronze 'amulet' now in the museum and a large quantity of fragments of mortaria chiefly rims of large rectangular section, fragments of black Belgic ware, Caistor ware, New Forest 'hollow' ware and T.S. At the north end of the north south trench remains of what appeared to be walling or foundations were discovered, including septaria, mortar, one whole large building tile and parts of others. The wall appeared to continue in a northerly direction under the north fence of the garden and into the garden of No 10 Papillon Road. It was covered up and should still exist under the grass. Other trial holes were dug in the part of the garden nearer the house but with no result.<1>
