Full Description

The discovery, while digging a hole for a linen-post c.5ft. from the east end of the garden path, of an amphora led to an excavation at 13 Rawstorn Road. Two trenches were dug, one roughly east and west about 8ft. long and a second at right angles to the first c.6ft. long. The Roman level was marked by quantities of oyster shells and was reached at a depth of 30" to 3ft. The maximum depth was about five feet. Finds included: A number of Iron nails and other corroded iron objects, a bronze 'amulet' now in the museum and a large quantity of fragments of mortaria chiefly rims of large rectangular section, fragments of black Belgic ware, Caistor ware, New Forest 'hollow' ware and T.S.
