Full Description

Priory farm is an interlinked farmstead located on the edge of Tiptree Heath. It first appears on the 1897-1904 Epoch 1 map, showing the site to be made up of one large interlinked cluster of buildings and three other outbuildings situated to the north of the main cluster. None of these buildings are listed. The modern map seems to show that over 70% of original farm buildings survive, with two outbuildings and two small buildings from the main cluster being demolished by 1972. The farmstead has undergone a split at an unknown date, creating two separate sites known as Priory Farm to the east and The Priory to the west. The Priory is made up of the western half of the main cluster, and Priory Farm is made up of the eastern half of the main cluster and the single remaining outbuilding to the northeast. In terms of modern buildings and extensions, Priory Farm has seen and increase in the number of buildings. To the north of the main cluster is a modern workshop, and to the east of the main cluster is a garage built in 2004. The main cluster has been reported to be used as accommodation since 2000, with a conservatory added at an unknown date. There are also nine other outbuildings surrounding the site, but their current uses are unkown. In 2011 the original storage building situated to the northeast of the main cluster was given planning permission to convert it into the new main accommodation. The original farmhouse seems to have been destroyed at some point in the past. In terms of Archaeology, this farmstead is situated on top of the site of Tiptree Priory, a C12 church dedicated to St Mary and St Nicholas. Priory Farm recieves special significance as it is located around a surviving common or heath, which in this case is Tiptree Heath. <1>
