Full Description

The present house is C16 but stands on the site of a small Augustinian priory, founded in the C12, and dedicated to St Mary and St Nicholas. The only remaining part of the priory is a rubble wall extending E of the present house, though the layout of the house may have followed the lines of the N, E and W sides of the cloister. <1> Founded by a member of the Tregoz family, apparently in C12. It never had more than 3 or 4 canons; one its suppression in 1525 when it became part of Cardinal Wolsey's estates, it had a prior and one canon. The remaining rubble wall is at TL 87551457, forming the S wall of an outbuilding. No features are visible to associate the wall with any part of the priory. Two rectangular ponds, centred TL 87401456, are possibly fish ponds associated with the site. <2> The surviving priory wall is of flint rubble, puddingstone and brick, with a large blocked C16 fireplace set in it. The wall has been capped recently and a window inserted. Sections of the wall were visible in the house during redecoration. After the suppression in 1525, it was granted to Wolsey who granted it to Cardinals College, Oxford in 1526, and then to Ipswich. It later reverted to the crown and thence, in 1547, to Thomas Darcy whose descendants probably built the present house (see 8210). <3> Copy of OS plan card in SMR, with walling and house marked, the two possible fish ponds are marked on the map. Additions in ink - line of ?enclosure W of the house, with tile spread within, and footings S and SE of the house. <4>

Site Assessment = Site is used for small scale agricultural and repairs works. <1>
