Full Description

A three-storied house with brick walls and tiled roofs, on site of a small C12 priory (see 8209). The house was built c1570 and then consisted of a main block, aligned E-W, of which the western half is still standing, and probably two wings projecting towards the S from either end of the main building. At the NW angle is a projecting turret, added c1600. There are later and `modern' additions at the back. The layout of the house may have followed the N, E, and S sides of the priory cloister. There are indications that the great hall once occupied the part destroyed. Within, the existing divisions are mostly modern, though the middle room on the ground floor has a wide fireplace, partly filled in, with a long closet E of it. The garden S of the house is enclosed on the E and W sides by brick walls, that on the W is bonded to the house and adjoining it a length of 40ft of rebuilt wall may indicate the dimensions of the destroyed W wing. <1> Fragment of Elizabethan brick mansion. What is left looks now excessively tall and rather gaunt. It was the left half of the frontage of a house which also had one or perhaps two lower wings coming forward. <2> After suppression the priory was granted to Cardinal Wolsey in 1525. In 1526 he granted it to Cardinals College, Oxford, and then to Ipswich. It later reverted to the Crown and thence in 1547 to Thomas Darcy, whose descendants probably built the present house. Most of the internal features are heavily restored or modern. Brewhouse, dairy and outbuildings incorporated at the rear. Some stone slab and brick floors. Wall enclosing front garden is C17 in origin, with later repairs. <3>
