Full Description
Building described as `Mithraeum'. It was first noted by Dr Duncan in 1853 who took the building to be part of a bath. Comparatively small building "so solidly constructed and so placed - at the corner of an insula, in its own walled temenos - that there can be no question of its having been a dwelling, shop or works of any private owner". It comprises a long paralleloggram, with major axes N-S, with an annexe on the E side. Plan and description of the building in source 1. It bears some similarity to Mithraic temples, although there are differences and this interpretation is not accepted by all - no finds would suggest this use. <1> <2> The building is 30ft square with double walls, clay being rammed between them, and a concrete floor, furrowed by wide gutters and a spring still filling it. Partly excavated in 1853. 3ft above the floor was an arched opening 2ft square, forming the mouth of a culvert which was traced for a distance of 200ft N to a gateway in the town wall. <3>
