Full Description
REd tessellated pavement discovered by workmen planting a goal-post near the centre of the meadow, only 18" below the surface. it measured 12.75ft E-W and 13.75ft N-S. There was a layer of pink mortar beneath it dropping to the N to the edge of a hollow filled with mixed clayey soil containing pottery, broken hypocaust tiles etc. The pottery dates to Antonine period. "Beneath this again was the ubiquitous layer of yellowish clay loam, here about 6" thick, the pottery from which however, seems restricted to about AD 90-120". Below was sandy subsoil. Only to the E could any extension to the building be traced - the remains of 44 pilae of hypocaust stood in position, the hypocaust 12ft square although the E and N sides were broken away. In the SW corner the wall was nearly 2ft high - 4 courses of septaria followed by 4 of tiles the top of which probably indicate floor level. remains of the tessellated pavement floor and its mortar bedding filled the whole space among the pilae - it had been completely broken into by robbers seeking the suspensory tiles. Conjectural reconstruction of the mosaic - geometrical design in black and white with a small floral panel in the centre. The walls had been lined to some extent by hollow flue tiles finished off with painted plaster. The building could not be traced further. The ground was explored northwards in a search for Roman buildings - Roman ground level was roughly terraced. "Beyond the midden" there was an area paved with fine gravel and beyond this lay the metalling of the E-W street (see 12454). Photo in this source. <1>
