Full Description

Building survey and excavation during alterations to Nos 2 and 3, and erection of a new building on the site of No 1. The earliest parts of the present building were dated C16-early C17 when No 3 was the northern wing of an H-plan house comprising Nos 3, 4 and 5. The semi-circular arches in the west wall of Nos 1 and 2 are of the same daet and probably formed an extension to No 3. Towards the end of the C17 the whole block was given a new brick facade of Flemish bond, incorporating pilasters at first floor level and large rectangular mullioned windows, two of which survived at the back of No 2. The building was divided into separate units during the first half of the C19 when the present doorways and sash windows were inserted. In the excavation several pits, dating from the C13-C17 were found. <1> Finds in Colchester Museum. <2>
