Full Description

A section was obtained across the street itself and the results from this were inconclusive. Several gravelled surfaces were found, the earliest of which probably date to the C11, C12 and C13. <1> <2> The earliest metalling sealed post-Roman topsoil and at least one stake hole. The latter was one of several which cut the topsoil, indicating a post-Roman structure fronting the street. The earliest metalling contained fragments of Roman tile. The lack of peg-tile is consistent with a pre-C13 date. Stratigraphically, the earliest metalling fits well with the stone wall along the frontage of building 28 (c.1150 and later, see ), and the likely level from which the foundation of this was cut. <3>
