Full Description
Medieval bastion (Bastion VIII), C14-C15. Destroyed in C17, probably after the siege. <1> <2> <3> The bastion was built of reused Roman building materials and was contiguous and contemporary to a refacing of the Roman wall, with reused Roman material. The bastion could not be directly dated other than as post-Roman. There is documentary evidence of wall repairs in 1312 and from at least 1382-1421 a prolonged programme of repairs was underway. The bastions are generally attributed to the latter period. The rear face of the Roman wall behind Bastion 8 was robbed in C15. It is likely that the bastion was demolished after the 1698 siege. This left a recess in the town wall, which had not been refaced here. This recess was nearly filled with bricks of c.C17 date. Only two stumps of the bastion survived, attached to the wall, and a fragment further out which seemed to be very close to its normal position. <4>
