Full Description

St Botolphs Medieval Gate. <1> The gates on the south wall are little known because it has so long been closely built up. They provide ample scope for conjecture. Morant mentions "St Botolphs Gate, anciently called South Gate" but he is referring to the gate, hitherto supposed medieval, which stood at the south end of Queen Street. According to Cromwell this "was the last that remained to Colchester" for its traces did not disappear until 1817 or 1818. <2> - <4>
