Full Description
In 1985 a site visit was made following the lifting of rotten flooring in the South Aisle. This revealed three brick vaults, one was only partially revealed as the rest was under the vestry.
The soil which covered the vaults was a loose brown loam with much rotted wood and part of a disarticulated human burial. The plaster had been stripped off the south wall of the south aisle to wainscot level. The visible fabric was flint rubble with a yellow mortar. Three courses of Brickworth had been laid as a facing at the base of the wall. Rectangular holes in the wal 0.7- 0.8m apart were filled with rotten wood and may have been supports for earlier pews. Monuments on the south aisle wall are probably associated with at least two of the vaults. <1>.
During June to July 1997 the excavation of four foundation pits for a proposed organ gallery revealed part of the inhumation. The burial, lying on it's back was alligned East- West with its head to the West. The top end of the inhumation, which was not uncovered, appeared to pre date the C13 tower and the C14 West wall. Of the church. <2>.
From this it was inferred that the pre 13th century west wall of the nave had been situated in a different location, possibly on a line somewhere in the area between the present day porches and the westernmost window in the North wall of the nave. Over 0.6m of archaeological deposits and three features of indeterminate date and function were encountered during the excavation. The bones in accordance with the wishes of the parochial Church Council were left in situ. <2>
