Full Description

A foundation is noted in the Union grounds (St Mary's Hospital, Pope's Lane) by P.G. Laver. Hull writes, 'We have no description, but his plan seems to show a square of about 18 ft. inside one of about 35 ft., and this resembles a temple more than a tomb.<1>

A plan at 1:2500 by Dr P.G. Laver exists which shows what appears to be a Romano-Celtic temple about 240 yards north-west of the Balkerne Gate. There are no details but the plan seems to show two squares one inside another.<2>

Trial-trench 1 of the 1997 evaluation was positioned to intersect with the (approximate) location of the temple. In the event, the trench 1 produced a L-shaped Roman cut-feature, c.2m below the ground level (MCC9298). The footing of a Roman building was, however, defined to the south in trench 2 (and it is possible that this is the remains of this building).<3> A geophysical survey, undertaken by Peter Cott as part of the evaluation, also failed to define the postulated temple (ECC2099).
