Full Description

An L-shaped 'cut' feature, dated to the Roman period, was defined in evaluation trench 1 (undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in 1997) at St Mary's Hospital (former Union Workhouse), Pope's Lane, Colchester. The cut feature F102 was defined below Roman toposil L104, c.2m below current ground level, cutting sandy layer L105 (first taken to be natural but later shown to be redeposited). Too little of the feature was defined to be confident of it's function.<1>

No evidence was found in trench 1 of the Roman temple recorded by P.G. Laver.<2>
