Full Description

During excavations at Sheepen in 1970 (ECC488), an early Roman industrial site was discovered. Parts of what appeared to be two compounds were found within the Claudian occupation of site I, this one containing traces of metalworking. See also MCC2877.

The site consisted of a compound, its boundary defined by three pits and some slots which were best interpreted as supports for a substantial fence around an open compound. Within the compound were traces of metal working activity including numerous features containing fragments of copper alloy and copper alloy waste. No hearths could be identified. A second compound to the west was also defined by post pits but most of its interior had been removed by a post-medieval gravel quarry. Two early Roman timber lined latrine pits were found in the area outside the compound.<1>
