Description
Explorations were made of a Roman temple situated on the playing field of the Royal Grammar School. The structure was known as a crop-mark. Investigations were carried out by members of staff and boys of the Royal Grammar School under the direction of first A.F. Hall and later Mr.J.F. Elam, headmaster. Because of the location on a rugby football pitch, the excavation trenches were as small as possible. Three long trenches were cut, two as diagonals to the enclosure and one along the main N-S axis. They were made in sections of 10 ft. length and were dug to a depth of 2 ft. to 3 ft. Many other trenches were also excavated. The excavations revealed a large building at the southern end of the enclosure, the temple building with pentagonal temenos wall, an oval enclosure ditch and two pits.<1>
