Description

Excavations were undertaken by A.F. Hall in field 1302 (marked on OS map 1:2500 Epoch 4, located to the east of Gryme's Dyke and to the north of Dugard Avenue) where H. Laver had recorded a Roman road close to Gryme's Dyke. An 18m long east-west trench was dug at the northern end of the field. No evidence of the road was found but Hall uncovered two ditches, one of which (ditch 9) was followed towards an entrance in Gryme's Dyke. Further trenches, the positions of which are unknown, were dug to the north and north-west in fields 1299 and 1300 respectively.<1><2> See plan in Hull's notes.<3>
