Description
Excavations were carried out in Stockwell Street, to test a theory that the street plan of the modern town was indicative of a Roman theatre. The work was directed by Brian Blake. The site of the supposed theatre was occupied at the time by a disused school. The part of the site chosen was covered by the disused garden to the west of the Stockwell Street School. An 85 ft long trench was laid out parallel and five feet from the eastern fence of the garden. The trench was 5 feet wide and alternate 10 foot lengths were opened initially with 14 foot gaps between. Initial findings related to a structure shown on the 1876 OS map, whilst most other areas were covered by 'dark earth' which in one trench continued from the surface down to the Roman levels. Below the 1876 structure were medieval and post medieval pits. The Roman level consisted of a layer of cobbled metalling, presumed to be a street.<1><2><3>
