Full Description
During excavations undertaken north of Stockwell in the Dutch Quarter in 1958 (ECC684), a north-south Roman street was uncovered. The street consisted of a layer of cobbles and stone, bound in clay. Different levels of 'make-up' were seen within it suggesting successive layers of surfacing material. The road had been much disturbed by later pit digging (see MCC1740).<1> In places the street was over two feet thick.<2>
A black and white print in the SMR file shows the road heavily pitted.<3>
