Full Description

During excavations at Stockwell in 1958 (ECC684), a group of medieval and post-medieval pits were discovered cut into a layers of black topsoil and the Roman street beneath (see MCC1739). The layers and pits were discovered beneath a 17th century ? building on the site which was depicted on the 1876 OS map of the town but had been demolished by the time of the excavation. Both the layers and pits were composed of rubbish, 'dumped when it was wasteland.'. The material ranged from the 14th to the 17th centuries (see MCC1741).<1><2><3>
