Description

Large scale excavations were undertaken between 1976 and 1979 in response to the proposed construction of a new police station by Essex County Council which would cover much of what remained of the Butt Road cemetery, known from earlier discoveries. The site was excavated as eight areas and revealed a Roman church, a secondary Roman building, extensive burials and other minor features. <1><2>
