Full Description
West of the Butt Road Roman church were the remains of a small utilitarian building of some kind. The remains consisted mainly of a group of about 20 small pits centred around a rectangular hearth. The pits were regular enough to suggest that they held wooden uprights. The hearth was 1.1m wide and 1.3m long and consisted of two to three roughly-coursed broken tile set in daub. The fire had clearly been concentrated at the centre of the hearth because towards the middle the tile and daub were burnt and the tiles were cracked. The building had been altered several times. Some of the pits were themselves replacements for earlier pits. Coin evidence provides a terminus post quem of AD 335 for the construction of the building, a date of AD 388 is suggested for its destruction or abandonment (the latest coin in the overlying destruction debris was issued AD 388-402).<1>
