Ten 1m x 1m archaeological test pits were excavated in March 2009 by 40 HEFA participants from Clacton County High School, Clacton County High Sixth Form, Gable Hall School, Colbayns High School, St Helena School and Tendring Technology College. These were sited to fill gaps not previously excavated, and also to focus on the eastern part of the present village which had seen little previous test pitting.<1><2> Test Pit 1 (WME/09/1): Walnut Tree House, 58 Coast Road. (TM) 600615 212598. The test-pit produced a wide range of pottery from the medieval period (12th century) onwards. Test Pit 2 (WME/09/2): Jasmine, 23 Victory Road. (TM) 600449 212674. The test-pit produced a wide range of pottery from the early medieval period (12th century onwards). Test Pit 3 (WME/09/3): 32 St Peters Road, West Mersea. (TM) 600712 212678. The test pit produced a sherd (4g) of Middle Iron Age pottery and Victorian pottery. Test Pit 4 (WME/09/4): 41 Firs Road. (TM) 600752 213015. All the pottery from this test-pit was Victorian. Test Pit 5 (WME/09/5): 41 Firs Road. (TM) 600752 213015 (this is the incorrect address and grid ref. It is actually 5 Mersea Avenue). The test pit produced a small sherd (1g) of Roman pottery and 16th century and later pottery. Test Pit 6 (WME/09/6): 23 Melrose Road. (TM) 601178 212773. The test-pit produced a couple of sherds of pottery dating to around the end of the medieval period, and one piece of Victorian. Test Pit 7 (WME/09/7): The Rectory, 93 Kingsland Road. (TM) 601481 212456. The test-pit produced one sherd of late medieval pottery and one piece of Victorian. Test Pit 8 (WME/09/8): Hillybroom House, 21 Prince Albert Road. (TM) 601625 212643. The test pit produced only one sherd of 17th century pottery. Test Pit 9 (WME/09/9): Fountain Cottage, 2 Queen’s Corner. (TM) 601534 213112. This test pit produced a sherd (6g) of Bronze Age pottery and a Roman greyware sherd (6g) as well as medieval and later pottery. Test Pit 10 (WME/09/10): 9 Brierley Avenue. (TM) 602215 213481. The test pit produced a sherd of 18th century and a sherd of Victorian.
