Description
In August 1936 a water main was cut along Culver Street from Head Street, against the sets paving the south gutter. The first length, to Bank Passage was unproductive. Opposite the SW corner of Bank Passage a red tessellated pavement was struck, which extended for 25ft eastwards. Just west of it stood a pottery vessel with shattered lid, and just east of it the sides of a doorway in tiles.
This was noted by Mr E.J. Rudsdale, who also observed slight traces of a gravelled surface opposite the back gate of Barclay's Bank, and, adjoining it on the east another red tessellated pavement. For further description see Hull. A Roman drain was found in this same trench opposite the door of Messrs Benham's printing works, only the top of the arch was exposed at a depth of 5ft 6in, running north-south, apparently on the west side of the N-S street. <1>
