Description
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a 20-30m pipe trench running from Queens Road / Beverley Road junction to the Lexden Road end of Beverley Road. The trench was dug to 0.8 to 1.0m deep, the base did not reach natural. A scatter of finds, principally Roman pottery, were recovered from an adjacent spoil heap and the trench edge. This consisted of fragments of four or more pottery vessels, small to medium size, about 10 sherds in all. Also some Roman tile, occasional oyster shell and animal bone, and a worked flint flake. There was no sign of cremated bone, so this material is presumably from a disturbed rubbish pit- however, there was no sign of a cut of any feature in the trench edge. A gravel area (possibly a road surface?) and a Roman cremation were also recorded. Some cremated bone and the flagon sherds were on the spoil heap, and some (50-60% of the bone) still in section in a dark / black sandy loam matrix in the trench side. The flagon top was approximately 30cm below modern ground level, and the bones were down to 50cm below modern ground. It was very clear that the cremated bone was not in the pot, nor were there any nails or signs of other vessels. A pit was also recorded, the fill was a dark sandy loamy sand mixture. Finds from the spoil heap near this feature included oyster shell, animal bone, 2nd -3rd century Roman pottery, and Roman tile. However, there were also fragments of post-medieval peg tile which may have come from the pit. It is therefore uncertain whether this pit was Roman or post-medieval. Dark soil was also observed, its date uncertain. <1> COLEM 1997.13 <2>
