Description
A watching brief was undertaken at Freda Gunton Lodge during the construction of an extension. This involved the digging of foundation trenches 2.0-3.0m deep over an area of approx 11.0 x 13.0m. An adjacent kitchen block to the east was built on a raft with minimal archaeological disturbance. Well preserved Roman deposits were observed within 0.5m of the present ground level, including extensive Boudican and pre-Boudican levels. Successive layers of metalling from the known north-south street were also recorded, and several robber trenches indicated the position of post-Boudican buildings.<1>
